The coal industry refers to an industry that mainly extracts coal resources. It is one of the main sources of national energy and an important pillar of the national economy. There are many enterprises in China's coal circulation industry, but they are small in scale.
At present, the main coal circulation modes in China are as follows:
There are approximately 100,000 coal circulation enterprises in China, which are small in scale. This is mainly because China's coal production and consumption enterprises are relatively scattered, and the industry concentration is low, which provides a living space for coal circulation service providers of different scales. The state is vigorously promoting the integration of coal mining enterprises, and the coal circulation market will also tend to be concentrated, which will gradually increase the market access barriers for coal circulation enterprises. The living space for small-scale coal circulation enterprises will continue to shrink, and large-scale, cross-regional circulation service providers will become the mainstream.
Since China's coal production is concentrated in the western and northern regions, while coal consumption is concentrated in the eastern and southern regions, and coal production bases are far from consumption centers, China's coal circulation presents a pattern of 'West-to-East Coal Transportation' and 'North-to-South Coal Transportation'. The transportation distance is long, and it spans different regions, requiring multiple modes of transportation (highway, railway, sea, river) to connect. Therefore, transportation has become a key link in China's coal circulation. Coal transportation in China is mainly based on three modes: railway, water transportation, and highway. Railway, with its advantages of large transportation capacity, fast speed, low cost, and low energy consumption, has become the main mode of land coal transportation. About 64.3% of coal transportation relies on railway transportation, and coal is also the largest type of goods occupying railway freight volume the largest type of goods, accounting for about 55.1% of China's railway transportation capacity. In the 'Three Wests Region' (Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Inner Mongolia) which are the main coal-producing areas, the proportion of coal transportation in the main transportation routes reaches about 90%. In the future, railways will continue to play an important role in coal transportation. According to the 'Twelfth Five-Year Plan' for coal industry development, in 2015, the national railway transportation demand for coal was 2.6 billion tons. Considering the imbalance in railway, port, production, and consumption links, the railway transportation capacity of 2.8 billion to 3 billion tons is required. Therefore, being able to obtain stable and sufficient railway transportation capacity is one of the competitive advantages of coal circulation enterprises.
